The Bad Habits of Albert Quint: Queer Labour and Liveable Lives (Public Lecture)
Prof. Matt Cook (Jonathan Cooper Professor of the History of Sexuality at the University of Oxford)
This lecture explores how work – most especially in the service sector, theatre, and armed forces – was practically, aspirationally, and erotically significant to queer lives in inter and post war Britain. Tracing the life of 23-year-old Albert Quint back and forward from his tantalising diary entries shines light on the literal labour involved in ‘doing being ordinary’ (Sacks, 1984) and, he argues, in ‘doing being deviant’ (Love, 2015). In this way he signals the importance to queer history of looking beyond the sensational and the radical to consider everyday quests for liveable lives.

Tour of the Antikensammlung in the Altes Museum
Guided tour led by Oxford alumna Dr Hildegard Wiegel exploring highlights of classical antiquity.
Come and join other Oxbridge alumni for a Saturday afternoon tour of the Altes Museum on the Museum Island. Followed by food & drink in a nearby restaurant.
After the success of Christopher Nolan’s “Odyssey”, archaeologist Dr Hildegard Wiegel contrasts Hollywood’s depiction of the ancient Greek world and its religious beliefs with what we know from scientific research. A quick taster: Despite Elizabeth Taylor’s portrayal, Cleopatra was by no means an overly made-up femme fatale, while the fate of Odysseus was shaped far more by women than Mr Nolan imagined. And what does today’s student drama have to do with ancient Greek practice?

Annette Dittert was Head of ARD Studio in London from 2008 until December 2025. In 2019 she was awarded “political journalist of the year” for her reporting on Brexit and in 2026 she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz).
